BOTL THE MODEL CHICKEN
Botl earned her name early—at just two days old, she managed to wedge herself inside the bottled water feeder, and the name stuck. From the start, she lit up for the camera and seemed determined to be part of everything. By four weeks old, she was posing among flowers, already at home in the spotlight. Botl had a big, curious personality and rarely missed a moment to insert herself—whether following her mum from room to room, inspecting every box and paper, or narrating her opinions along the way. Botl chose how she wanted to shine, so we retired her costumes as she aged, but her constant dialogue made her a fan favorite on social media. She passed away quietly in her mum's arms at the age of 5 and is missed every day.
Tonya Dalhaus, Author, Creator, and Hen Mum

Tonya Dalhaus is a photographic artist, writer, and devoted chicken mum whose work reveals the emotional and intellectual lives of her hand-raised flock. With a background in broadcast journalism and fine art studies at Oxford Brookes University, she captures unscripted, documentary-style images that challenge how we see chickens—not as commodities, but as sentient, expressive individuals.
Her photography has been recognized in regional juried shows and is featured in her children’s book Botl and Hatti Share!—part of a broader mission to invite affection, empathy, and a second look at the animals
